The Suffolk Resolves were written in Old Stoughton and believed to be the basis for the Declaration of Independence. The Stoughton Musical Society, founded in 1786, has the oldest constitution of any musical society in the country. Stoughton’s train station, built in 1888, is the only one in Massachusetts to have a clock tower. This station was listed on the National Register of Historic Placed in 1974. In 1874 the Stoughton Public Library was established.
Although originally an agricultural community, the town has a history of manufacturing. It also has an emerging retail base and substantial land zoned for commercial and industrial use.
Stoughton has one public middle school, five elementary schools and access to private schools in nearby towns. Stoughton High School has both an award winning music program and newspaper.
With the Bird Street Sanctuary, water department lands, recreational fields and municipal golf course, the town has significant open spaces. Additionally, Ames Long Pond offers a quite country setting and facilitates the organized swim programs.
