About Raynham, MA - Happy to be your hometown Heating & Air Conditioning Contractor!
The area that is now known as Raynham was settled in 1639 as part of Taunton. It was incorporated as a town in 1731. Shortly after the discovery of bog iron along the Two Mile (Forge) River, the Taunton Iron Works was established by James and Henry Leonard. The iron works continued operation in Raynham until 1873. Ship building also bolstered the town’s early economy. To form cradles for the boats, ridges were cut into the banks of the Taunton River. Logs were floated across the river and dragged up to the cradles by oxen. Reverend Silas Hall and his family owned this shipbuilding property. Although Raynham had industry, it maintained an agrarian base. At one point in time, the town had more animals than people. Today, most of the farmland has been developed for housing and business.
Education has always played an important role in Raynham. When the first families of the town petitioned the Massachusetts General Court for independence from Taunton, the court instructed that they “provide a schoolmaster to instruct their children to read and write.” Today Raynham students are educated by the Bridgewater-Raynham Regional School District.
In addition to the Raynham Public Library, the town also has a private library. Only a few private libraries still exist in Massachusetts.
The climate, like most of Massachusetts, is continental.
