Norton was first settled in 1669 as part of the Taunton North Purchase. As the area, grew residents wanted to form their own town because of the inconvenience of travelling to Taunton for church services. In 1711 the area was incorporated as the Town of Norton. The residents built their first church on the Norton Common. One of the town’s notable residents was Jonathan Eddy who was born in Norton in 1726/27. He was a Colonel in the American Revolution.
With a population of 19,031(2010 census) Norton is home to the TPC Golf Course that hosts the Deutsche Bank Championship.
Norton has its own public school system. There are three elementary schools, Norton Middle School and Norton High School, which is located near the center of town. High School Students also have the option of attending the Southeast Regional Vocational-Technical High School in Eaton or the Bristol County Agricultural High School. There are also two private schools in town.
Norton is also home to Wheaton College. Founded in 1834, this institution is a private four-year liberal arts college. The student body is comprised of approximately 1,600 students, with a student-faculty ratio of 11:1. Since 2000 Wheaton students have won more than 166 scholarship awards, including three Rhodes Scholarships.
Like most of New England, Norton enjoys a continental climate.
